In general, if you have been away from the rigidity of school a refresher course is always helpful. I haven't had much exposure to this certification but I am curious about its impact in the Middle East? Do many engineers have this certitication in that part of the world?

Some countries and regional authorities around the world have licensing, certifying, or chartering authorities. Most don't. Very few have credentials that require an exam of technical knowledge. In the U.S., each state has a board of engineers that administers an exam, but there is no reciprosity between states. Most other chartering credential authorities judge competency through experience and board interviews. IATMI (Indonesia) and SPE have a joint certification program by exam.

SPE created the certification program at the request of the membership for a credential of technical knowledge, especially in areas that have no credentialing authority. The overall goal of the program is to provide a credential that is globally recognized as certification of technical expertise. The certification program is new and growing. If you require any additional information, feel free to contact the society at www.spe.org and click on Career/Education or the direct link of www.spe.org/certification

I was one of lucky ones to have the honor and sit the first PP exam outside the US. I must admit the experience was unique in every aspect. Once you commit to doing the exam and attending the review course, it is back to school again but in a very enjoyable way. On the value of the CPP program: you get the recognition of a reknowned institute like th SPE that you ARE a professional; you get promoted in your company (I did!); and you join a group of professional with a passion of the field (being drilling, production, geology, or reservoir is secondary).
I encourage people from every discipline in the petroleum engineering/earth sciences communities to enroll in the program to become certified.
I hope the above helps and lets keep this blog alive!
Thanks, Haitham
