Construction of Florida casino begins United Press International
MIAMI, June 5 (UPI) -- The construction phase of a plan to bring a casino to Miami-Dade County, Fla., has begun with the ritual groundbreaking ceremony, Churchill Downs Inc. (NASDAQ:CHDN) says.Churchill Downs Inc. said construction on the county's first-ever casino is ready to go with a tentative opening date of early 2010, The Miami Herald reported Friday. The company is working on constructing the new 104,000-square-foot gambling site with Calder Race Course. Both groups officially welcomed the start of the construction phase with Wednesday's official ceremony. If construction efforts go as planned and the casino opens before the 2010 Super Bowl, the site will be ready when scores of NFL fans arrive at nearby LandShark Stadium for the annual football championship. The Herald said in addition to offering visitors valet parking and three restaurants, the new casino will feature 1,225 slot machines along with other gaming opportunities.
